I've never counted the football pitches, I just knew there were a lot, easily over a million, so discovering there are only 60 is a bit of a disappointment. It is an oasis, mainly a bird-free oasis, but I struggle on. Pre really being into birds, the reason we moved here is because of all the green open spaces, so it has worked out well. You can probably tell roughly where I live based on my little route thing in the next post, so if you zoom out on Google Maps, you'll see we're sandwiched between the Flats to the West, South and South-east, Bush Wood to the North, and then Wanstead Park to the East and North-east. There is loads more habitat than I can do justice, and there are only a few local birders. If I didn't have a job I could be out all the time and find LOADS! Oh, wait...Jonathan Lethbridgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12791327377479687655noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7054885544428581277.post-8444370614022728342009-11-13T10:48:08.287+00:002009-11-13T10:48:08.287+00:00I was so surprised at how attractive all that habi...I was so surprised at how attractive all that habitat looks that I had a gander at Wanstead Flats on the wondrous Google Maps. As well as all the rough and scrubby stuff, a staggering 35 football pitches (plus 10 little pitches - 5-a-side? Toddlers' Footie?) to the E of Lake House Road, plus another 11 (+4 tiddlers) to the W! It's huge! Must look like an oasis from the sky.

And what am I doing counting football pitches on a satellite map at 10:30 in the morning? Good question...Gavin Haighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17242398421328525578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7054885544428581277.post-63237987331338462662009-11-13T01:53:38.792+00:002009-11-13T01:53:38.792+00:00Wow, that's really lovely! Much nicer than "Wanstead" sounds.

I got "squelch squirch" right away, can you tell there's a 2.5-yr-old in the house?Laurelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13440658754416289147noreply@blogger.com
